Greetings. This is Matthew Butterick. I’m a writer, designer, programmer, and lawyer.
As a designer and programmer, I make design & publishing tools that help writers produce more effective documents with less effort. My focus is computational typesetting: creating software that automates typographic decisions.
As a lawyer, I am currently serving as co-counsel in class-action lawsuits against multiple generative AI products.
Previously: I wrote the books Typography for Lawyers, Practical Typography, and Beautiful Racket. I designed the fonts in the MB Type library, including Equity, Concourse, and Triplicate. I created Pollen, a programming language for web publishing; a document-layout system called Quad; and Archetype, a font-editing app. I’m an experienced print, web, and typographic designer.
I have a visual-studies degree from Harvard University and a law degree from UCLA. I live in Los Angeles with my wife Jessica.
